The Antelope Lending Library is a small, mobile community library that primarily serves the Southeast side of Iowa City. Iowa City is a UNESCO City of Literature—the only one in the United States—but not everyone has equal opportunity to participate in community and literary events. For the population on the Southeast side, which is largely immigrant and lower-income families, downtown is a destination for special trips, not a common occurrence. This means that the multitude of events and resources there are inaccessible to these families. By having a mobile library in this community, we increase their opportunities to participate in events and activities designed to promote literacy and learning. The skills we foster at the Antelope Lending Library will empower kids and families to take control of their own futures.
We have partnered with the Iowa Youth Writing Project (IYWP), an amazing non-profit outreach collective that was founded by University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop graduates in 2010. IYWP aims to empower, inspire, and educate Iowa’s youth through language arts and creative thinking. They provide one-of-a-kind writing, tutoring, publishing, and creative learning opportunities to Iowa’s children and teens at little or no cost. We are incredibly lucky to be working with them on this exciting library endeavor.
The Antelope Lending Library is the dream of University of Iowa library student Cassandra Elton with the support of many others. We are all working to make this library a reality, but we can’t do it alone! We need books, we need computers, we need internet, we need funds, we need volunteers.
